Operation Kaleidoscope Kids

This last spring my friend, Bethany, wanted to do something for kids.  She thought it would be fun to have a 5k fun run.  She searched the internet for ways that she could help kids.  Bethany came up with wanting to buy toys for children in hospitals.  And, she went for it!

Bethany, along with some other friends, started organizing a group to raise money to buy toys in hospitals.  Bethany came up with the name "Operation Kaleidoscope Kids" for this group.  Also, she designed a logo for this fundraiser.

Now, we needed to raise some money.  The first thing we (Bethany, Hannah, Tenley, Tikvah, and I) did was started making bracelets, to try to sell as a way to raise money.  We also sold lemon-aid and cookies at baseball games in our town.  Change boxes were put around at local businesses, along with flyers advertising the fun run.  Bethany and Hannah, her biggest help, set up a bank account for this organization too.

The biggest fundraiser was the 5k we held.  Bethany put a lot of effort into organizing this.  Bethany and Hannah got sponsors, t-shirts made, online registration, and articles in the newspaper.  Bethany made kaleidoscopes for the winner of the race, and had goodie bags for the participants.  They put a lot of time and effort into this event.  (Amber was also a helper for the race.)

Through all of our fundraising, we raised around $1,600.  So, now, it was time to go shop for toys for the kids.  The hospital has a wish list of items you can bring/buy.  This shopping trip was done yesterday.  My mom brought Bethany, Hannah, my little sister, and me up to Burnsville to the Toys 'R' Us.  We spent $1,010.75 and that was after using a 15% off coupon on the entire purchase!  The rest of the money we gave as a donation to the hospital (after leaving a little in the bank account).

Getting started.

Our carts loaded with goodies!  We purchased stuffed animals, books, dolls, games, cars, baby rattles, and much more.

 Checking out.
 Santa Clause's wish list!

After stopping at Toy 'R' Us, we headed over to the Children's Hospital in Minneapolis.  We dropped off the toys and then had a scheduled tour.  We didn't see too much of the hospital, but we learned a lot, and it was pretty interesting.

This has been a great experience for all of us!
